Herne Bay United 2 – 3 Kings Lynn

The Premier league team are off to a winning start

The King’s Lynn RHC premier league team started their new campaign away to Herne Bay United.

Arriving for the game and after having a successful pre season, the team knew that they could potentially cause an upset having done the same thing in the previous 2013/14 season.

The game started in an attacking sense with both teams holding possession well and exchanging free flowing counter attacking moves. A few minutes passed and King’s Lynn found themselves beginning to get into their usual routine and began to create some good goal scoring chances. A rare blip in the HBU defence allowed for a clinical through pass to Jamie Griffin, who made no mistake in dispatching the finish taking King’s Lynn in to a 1 – 0 lead.

Following the restart after the goal, HBU began to become more dominant in possession and it wasn’t long before they found themselves on the scoreboard as well. An initial shot was well saved by Daren Didcock in goal, however some slack defending and a misplaced pass fell straight to an HBU player who firmly finished the ball into the net making it 1 – 1

After the goal, King’s Lynn called a timeout to regain their composure and made a pre-planned keeper change. After the timeout King’s Lynn found themselves losing possession too easily and soon had Will Martin to thank for making a few solid saves. Following a mad five minutes from King’s Lynn, where they lost control, the ball fell to Sam Kay who cleverly turned the defender and neatly finished the shot, much to the delight of the travelling team who now led 2 – 1.

Half time score HBU 1 – 2 King’s Lynn

The second half began in much the same fashion as the first, with again both teams holding the ball and playing slick hockey. Unfortunately for the away team, HBU found themselves in a more dominant position and after some good pressure, the ball broke for a clear breakaway only for the attacker to be brought down by Jamie Griffin and a blue card was shown. The direct free hit was well saved by Will Martin and allowed the away team to set up their defence with only three players on the rink. After some good passing from HBU they found the gap to take a quick shot which happened to deflect off a Lynn player’s stick into the net, 2 – 2.

After the goal, the game fell purely into a possession based game with both teams trying to break each other down but having no such luck. With two minutes to play the game began to light up with both teams now in full on attacking mode. With chances being created both ends of the rink, the ball broke free in the centre of the rink with 35 seconds to go. The ball was quickly picked up by Lynn who moved the ball quickly out to Josh Taylor who’s first slap shot was saved well by the HBU goalkeeper, only for the rebound to fall straight back at his stick where he coolly placed the ball into the far top corner of the net – jubilation for the travelling team, 3 – 2.

HBU then had to throw everything at King’s Lynn in hope of finding a late equaliser however it wasn’t to be as Lynn ran the clock down with some clever possession to take their first win of the season from their first game.

NRHA LogoA solid performance from Lynn in their opening game is a good platform to start on for the season ahead. Every player having contributed in some way to the successful start. It also must be added that HBU played their part in a very entertaining competitive game for all the spectators present.
